Running

A long time ago, The Boy would say around the time of cowboys and Indians, I will take exception to that length. But any way, a long time ago, when I was a teenager, I could eat anything and could stay as skinny as a bean pole. Now, years (I won't quantify them) and two kids later, I look at food, and already I can feel my hips and thighs expanding.

I've always been athletic. For years basketball was my passion. This year the area recreation commissions offered a women's league for basketball.  I played. It was a rude awakening for this thirty something baller, my body could effortlessly remember the moves of a once great player (kidding) but I couldn't make my body do it...

This once fit lady is now one out of shape momma.

After grumbling about my predicament to a fellow momma of 2, Leslie, we made a pact to work out every chance we could (being working moms it was going to be difficult).  After we found our favorite workout class with Martina, we figured out we weren't going to make it for awhile due to the impending soccer and t-ball seasons we determined maybe we should run...run with a goal of the Wichita Kansas' River Fest River Run 10k.

So we ran and we ran and we ran.  We ran in the rain, we ran in the wind, up hills, on gravel, with respiratory infections, through town.  We ran.

We also strive to eat better.  We've even lulled our husbands into eating better.  I'll never label myself a foodie, but right now, I'm as close as I'll ever be - I cooked with milled flax seed for goodness sake!  With our deadline for "being in shape," whatever that means, tomorrow.  I've lost over 15 lbs and feel great about myself and where I am both mentally and physically.

Today is the day, we leave tonight, for our 7:30 am start time, tomorrow!  The humidity is supposed to be 95% when the gun shoots.  Quite a challenge since we've been training in humidity 30% or below.

Isn't that what this is? A challenge.  Isn't that life?

This is awesome! Run like the wind! Hopefully with it and not into it...

I've been trying to train for a Warrior Dash (3 miles) and Tough Mudder (11 miles), but without a running partner it's become difficult to maintain the motivation.

Best of luck in tomorrow's run!

That is exactly what this is about.....rise to the occasion and run the mile you are in. I am running a 10k in Garden City at 7:30 am.

Ryan,

Thanks so much, Ryan! We couldn't have asked for a better day to run!

It is tought without a partner, I couldn't have done it without Leslie. Maybe find a running group, even if it is virtual. They can motivate you and hold you to your training program, from where ever!

Good luck in your training and your runs! They sound like lots of fun!

Crystal! It went better than I anticipated. I met all of my goals and have moved on to a half marathon...although I haven't found one I really want to do, yet. So I continue to run in area 5k's and 10k's where I can! Good luck in your running! I hope it brings you as much fun, fellowship and friends as it has me! - Lori
